Respiratory Therapist Education Program

Respiratory Therapist Education Program

In 2007 LRMC entered into a partnership with Millersville University to co-sponsor a long-standing local Program in Respiratory Therapy.  The program was founded in St. Joseph Hospital in the early 1960s by Dr. Howard Robbins and Luke Wenger.  It has been in continual operation with full accreditation since respiratory therapy programs were first accredited.  Other than a 10-year hiatus the program has operated in this facility since then.

The program offers a professional training course that dovetails with two degree offerings in the Biology Department at Millersville.  The first was begun in 1982 is a BS degree in Biology.  It consists of a three-year preparation in science and liberal arts followed by the professional phase.

The second is brand new and is slated for a fall 2009 roll-out.  It is a BS in Allied Health Technologies that consists of a modified two-year preparation in science and liberal arts followed by the professional phase.  We are excited about the new curriculum because it literally can be completed in three and a half years instead of the four and a half needed for the Biology degree!

The program also accepts on a space-available basis, applicants who already hold a baccalaureate degree with certain specified undergraduate science coursework.  These candidates enter directly into the professional phase of the program.

The program works closely with the professional respiratory therapists in LRMC’s Respiratory Therapy Department who assist in the clinical training of the students.
